Early Genealogy Programs - The Humble Beginnings of Genealogy Software on the Computer

This is a great reflection back on early genealogy programs for the personal computer...

  1. I think I must have started with the very beginning free-be program. The first couple of years I transitioned to more progressive programs as I understood what I wanted/needed. Boy - did I have a lot of clean up work to do with each change. Now I happily use TMG and have no limitations. No more changing programs for me, thank goodness!

    1. Hi Theresa,

Thanks for the reply! I have used them all, it seems. I really started with Broderbund Family Tree Maker 3 (I found I still had the books in my library, and I think the program came on floppy disk!), and I had used tons of others along the way, but for entry and creation of my tree I still use Broderbund Family Tree Maker, but I am up to version 9 now...lol...

I have version 10 and 11 as well, but I was not very fond of either; nor was I fond of the 2009 version by Ancestry. I have used Legacy, The Master Genealogist, Family Tree Builder, The Complete Genealogy Builder & Reporter, OhmiGenes, Roots Magic, Family Tree Legends, and tons more.

I the only thing that I enjoy other software for is for their decidedly creative and aesthetically appealing printed charts. ;)

Like I said, I am a die hard Broderbund Family Tree Maker fan... =)
